POPULARITY IN SINGAPORE APPRECIATION BY RESIDENTS A considerable amount of New land produce is imported by merchants in Singapore, and is very welcome thore, according to Captain A. Snow, who has been engaged in seafaring work, mainly as "a pilot, in the Straits Settlements, for about 50 years, and is now visiting Christchurch in the courso of a tour of New Zealand. He stated in an 'interview that New Zealand butter, cheese, dried milk, mutton and lamb are largely used, and are highly prized. There were 7000 or 8000 Europeans in Singaporo, he said, out of a total population of half :i million. The majority were Chinese, some of whom were very wealthy. , They lived in the better residential part of tlio town along with the Europeans; the poorer workers lived in another section, and the third part of the town was tho business area. Singapore was proud of the good health of its people, lie said. There had not been an epidemic for 20 years. Tho construction of the Singapore naval base was being pushed steadily ahead, said Captain Snow. Those in charge of the work were all Europeans, but many Chinese, Indian, Javanese and Malayan coolies were employed,
