SALARY RESTORATIONS
APPEAL TO EMPLOYERS VIEWS OF MR. COATES "FOLLOW GOVERNMENT'S LEAD" [BY TELEGRAPn —SPECIAL REPORTER] PAPAROA. Thursday An appeal to private employers to follow the lead giv«n by the Government in granting further restorations in salary and wages Was made by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Coates, in the course of his speeches in tho Kaipara electorate to-day. Mr. Coat.es addressed meetings at Hukatere, Parahi and Kuawai. " The improvement in tho public finances in 1934 and 1935 enabled tho Government to make a well-deserved restoration of the greater part of the cuts in civil servants' salaries," said Mr. Coates. " During the same period there has been an improvement just as marked in the budgets of Lhe majority of private businesses. .1 know. that in many cases employers have recognised the sacrifices made by their staffs during the worst of tho depression and have made complete or partial restorations of the cuts imposed in 1931 and 1932. " When tho Government was forced to impose cuts in order to reduce costs similar action was taken by tho majority of private concerns. Now that a considerable measure of recovery has taken place and there is a strong prospect of continued improvement, 1 would urge upon private employers the desirability of effecting further restorations in 'line with the policy of the Government. The capacity of any particular industry to pay must naturally be taken into consideration, but evidence of improved conditions is so general that there should be scope for fairly generous restorations. 1 '
