WORK FOR 1400 MEN
OFFICERS AND CLERKS POLLING DAY OCCUPATION MOST OF STAFFS ENGAGED About 1400 men will receive employment on election day,' November 27, as deputy returning officers or poll clerks at the polling places in and around Auckland. At the last general election tho number so employed was about 1000, the increase on the present occasion being due to the extra work entailed by the liquor poll. Many of the .men had had previous experience and their capabilities were known. Other things being equal, preference had been given to unemployed men and returned soldiers. Subject to minor adjustments, tho following are details of tho staffs to be engaged in the various polling places, with the figdres for 1931 in parentheses, the total for Auckland Central including the number of liquor poll clerks to bo employed in Auckland East and West:— Auckland Central, 190 (82); Auckland East, 90 (100); Auckland West, 91 (90); Auckland Suburbs, 138 (81); Parnell, 170 (110); Eden, 120 (76); Grey Lynn, 100 (70); Roskill, 160 (95); Waitemata, 123 (81); Manukau, 80 (89); Hauraki, 143 (120). Preparation for the provision of polling place equipment has already been taken in hand by Government officers. The work involves among other things the distribution of ballot boxes and furniture and the supplying of screens for the booths. Much of the work cannot be done until the day before polling day, as many of the polling places are located in rooms which normally are in daily use for other purposes. i
