BOWERS OF FLOWERS

ROSES, ORCHIDS AND IRISES Not only for individual prize blooms, but for the effect of massed flowers set in most artistic bowers, the Auckland Horticultural Society's rose show, which commences at the Town Hall to-day, will well repay minutes or hours spent in a visit. This much was evident last night, when the hall was being prepared for tho exhibition. Tho society has devoted considerable effort in recent years to a centre feature. For this show, it is a lawn surrounded by rock gardens carrying about 2000 choice irises presented to the society by Mrs. Urguhart, the noted Rotorua horticulturist, who also has a special exhibit in the show. In the middle of the garden will bo a fountain and goldfish' pond. An exhibition of orchids from tho garden of Mr. F. C. Mappin is alone worth a visit. The Auckland Racing Club has mado a very pretty corner with calceolarias and the Parks Comvmittee of the City Council is. making • a rose bower. All these are additional to the main purpose of tho show, to bring to public notice the magnificent roses that can be grown in Auckland gardens. It is claimed by the society that the show will surpass anything of the kind ever seen in Auckland. If the exhibits to be staged this morninft approach the standard of thps© arranged last night the claim will be an understatement-. Tho show will bo opened at 1.30 this afternoon and i will continue until to-morrow evening.
