MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED

COLLISION AT CROSSING DASH INTO WORKERS' TRAIN [by TELEGRAPH —PriESS association] CHRISTCHTTRCH, Tuesday A fatal level-crossing accident o<v curred at Glandovey Road, Fendalton, early this morning, when a motorcyclist, Mr. Grant Bethell Duncan, a single man, aged 25 years, crashed into a north-bound workers' train. Mr. Duncan suffered severe head injuries and died when on his way to the Christchurch Hospital in a St. John ambulance. ' The warning bell and signal were working correctly at the time, but apparently Mr. Duncan did not realise the train was in the vicinity until he was about 50ft. from the line. On approaching the crossing the train slackened speed to between 25 and 30 miles an hour. The train was almost on the crossing, however, before the motor-cyclist was noticed, and there was, no chance of pulling up in. time to avoid the accident. The brakes were applied and the train came to a "standstill in 25ft. Houses and trees obscured a view of the line north and south until quite close to the crossing when proceeding west, but the warning bell is a loud one and, Jn addition, a red sign swings backward and forward over the middle of the crossing
