OBITUARY

MR. E. S. BARTON The death has occurred at Whangarei of Mr. Edmund Simeon Barton, an early settler. Born at Reading, England, in 1854, Mr. Barton was the son of the late Professor C. H. Barton and went with his parents to Australia at an early age. Mr. Barton left his home in Adelnide when only 14 and was employed on a cattle run in the Northern Territory for some years. Arriving in New Zealand over 50 years ago, Mr. Barton was one of the original settlers when the Ballance Block, Wellington, was taken up. He farmed there successfully for some years and . later farmed near Tariki, Taranaki. After his retirement Mr. Barton spent considerable time at Whangarei, usually spending the winter in the South Sea Islands. He was not married. MR. D. 0. SHEFFIELD The death has occurred at his home at Henderson of Mr. Duncan Campbell Sheffield, aged 88. Born at Felton. near London, he was educated at Bedford Grammar School. Mr. Sheffield cnine to New Zealand in the Ida Zeigler in 1865. After being engaged in gold mining at Thames for a short period, he went farming at Port Albert, and married Miss E. L. Haselden, youngest daughter of the late Mr. Charles Haselden, of To Arai. Subseqently, Mr. Sheffield was engaged in farming at Bombay, Pokeno and Taniwha, before he retired and took up residence at Henderson. Mrs. Sheffield .died eight years ago. There are three children, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren^ MR. D. F. McATTLAY The death has occurred at Kalgoorlio, West Australia, of Mr. D. F. McAulay, for many years manager of the Associated Mine, on the Golden Mile. Born in New Zealand in 1866, Mr. McAulay went to the West Australian goldfiekls as a young man. He was manager of several mines before being appointed superintendent of the Boulder Perseverance Mine at Kalgoorlie, and in 1911 he assumed the general management of the Associated Mine, retaining the position until last year, when the mine changed ownership. Mr. McAulay is survived by his wire and two children who reside at Perth. MR. F. H. .BAKEWELL [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr. Frederick Haslam Bakewell, senior inspector of schools in the Wellington education district from 1917 to 1924, and father of Dr. Helen Bakewell, of Wellington, Dr. R, F. BakeweM, of Christchurch, and Dr. Roger Bakewell, of Petoue. Mr. Bakewell was born in Kent, England, in 1858 and was educated at Queen's College, Trinidad, West Indies, the Otago Boys' High School, Dunedin, and Otago University, where he graduated M.A. in 1896. After farming for some years he commenced school teaching in 1883 and was appointed an inspector of schools in 1898. Mr. Bakewell,' who retired 11 years ago, served for a number of years as a member of the Victoria University College Council. Ete also served on the Wellington Hospital Board.
