THE OLDEST LIVING THINGS IN THE WORLD
That Is how ono writer hag described the giant red- i I woods of California. These vast trees are supposed to be j j 1 even older than New Zealand's monuments of antiquity, the giant kauri forests of North Auckland. But a few hundred years make little difference in the archives of these ancient temples of the forest, whose years, according to some scientists, are numbered in thousands I The sketch above is from a photograph of Wawona, ono of California's most famous redwoods. This monster is over 300 ft. high, three times taller than the highest city building in Auckland, and in the old coaching days a four-horse vehicle could bo driven through the tunnel at its base, which is 30ft. through . . . and Wawona is still living and growing!
