STRANDED MAHENO
HOPES OF REFLOATING JAPANESE OWNER'S PLANS BRISBANE. 1 Ot. 21 Another attempt is to be made to refloat tho steamer Maheno, which was beached in a cyclone on Fraser Island of! the Queensland coast last 'July, while being towed to Japan. ] A Japanese marine expert, who inspected the vessel, says thero is deli- ' nite hope of towing her off, and the steamer Oonah will shortly arrive on the scene with 100 men and complete salvage gear. If the efforts fail tho Maheno will bo broken up on the spot and loaded on to the Oonah.
The M a heno nt one time was the finest vessel of the Union Company's fleet. Her service was in the Melbourne-South Island-Wellington run last summer. Afterward she was laid up in Sydney, until she was sold to Japanese shipbresikcrs a few months ajro. She left Sydney for Japan in tow oF the Oonah, which had also been sold to the Japanese for scrapping.
