SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

: Mr. (j. 1 S. Baylis, H.Sc\. who was j recently awarded the DufTus Lubecki Scholarship for sciontifir research by the Auckland University College Council, intends to continue his investigations on the mangrove and mangrove communities in which he lias been engaged during the past session. Some aspects of this research, which lias been conducted in the botany department of Auckland University College, will have an interesting practical bearing in relation to the reclamation of mangrove swamps, thousands of acres of which exist in northern New Zealand. The mangrove (Avicennia officinalis) is a widespread plant in tropic regions, but New Zealand is the only country lying wholly within the temperate zone in which it occurs.
