TAUPIRI SWAMP
PROGRESS OF DRAINAGE BENEFIT TO FARM LANDS [from our own correspondent! HAMILTON, Thursday There was a slackening in tho progress made in connection with the comprehensive scheme to drain the Taupiri Swamp during the winter months, but with tho advent of improved weather tho work is being accelerated. There are 140 men employed on tho job, and 30 more have been needed for a fortnight. More than half tho work has now been done, and an appreciable benefit has already been noticed. Two winters ago tho country in tho Mangawara Valley was subject to heavy flooding and large areas were inundated tor weeks at a time. During tho last wintor, although 20in. more rnin fell, there was no flooding. Pmt lands near the drains have dropped from Ift. to 4ft., and tho process of consolidation is well advanced. One farmer has grassed 100 acres which previously was sodden and valueless, and throughout the extensive <ireu served by tho improved drainage system, the carrying capacity of tha land has been greatly increased. There are 90,000 acres, in the Mangawara Valley and much of this land will be benefited by the drainage operationß in progress.
