MORE ROAD WORKS
WAIWERA HILL SECTION BETTER TOURIST HIGHWAYS ROTORUA AND TAUPO [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday A schedule of road works drawn up by tho Main Highways Board to supplement those already announced in tho Public Works Statement was referred to to-day by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. Bitchencr. Tho programme includes reconstruction of the Waiwera Hill section on the main northern high v/r.y between Auckland and at an estimated cost or £14,000. An outline of that work has already been published.
Other works are: —Reconstruction and sealing of approximately 20 miles of tourist highways io the Uotorua and Taupo districts, complementary to tho steps taken by tho Tourist Department to improve tho chief tourist attractions of tho Dominion; reconstruction of the road between Utiku and Mangaweka, at an estimated cost of £12,000; construction of the Flowery Creek deviation between Greymouth and Hokitika; improvements to tho.Lindis Pass section of highway on one of the principal South Island tourist routes. The new programme is the result of investigations carried out by tho interdepartmental committee recently appointed for the planning of public works. It will result in work for a considerable number of unemployed. Financial assistance is to be granted by the Unemployment Board, while the Main Highways Board is contributing from additional funds made availablo to it bv the Government.
Arrangements are being made to put tho full programme in hand almost immediately. In the majority of tho works mentioned surveys have been completed for some time, and financial considerations alone have caused delays in the commencement of operations.
HOBSON COUNTY ROADS CAMPS TO BE ESTABLISHED [from our own correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Thursday The Hobson County Council has received advice from tho Minister of Employment, Hon. S. G. Smith, that camps for unemployed are to be established to carry out the following road works:—
Dargaville to Pukehuia. —Road forming and metalling, thrco miles; estimated cost, £4103. This now route will give access to properties having a frontage to the Northern Wairoa River, which was formerly served by river steamers.
Tutamoe to Rangatira.—Road metalling, four miles (£2500). This portion of the road was formerly the main route connecting Kaihu with Taheko and was built at considerable expenditure.
Hoyles to Waiotira (Arapohue main highway).—Road forming and metalling, four miles (£2123). The new route will give Arapohue settlers more direct access to the Waiotira railway junction, saving some 10 miles.
