RAIN BADLY NEEDED

NORTH OTAGO'S PLIGHT LOSSES OF STOCK AND CROPS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Thursday Conditions are still severe in North Otago as a result of the dry spell, although some relief from recent rains has been experienced in the southern areas of the province. In the vicinity of Oamaru numbers of lambs are to be seen dead in the fields. In order to prevent sheep and cattle from dying of thirsty many farmers have resorted to killing off their stock, so they will be heavy losers.

In one section of tho district less than 9in. of rain has been recorded for the year, and other reports show similar averages. Little cropping has been done, and even this is in very poor condition. Unless a downpour comes soon, it is considered that the North Otago harvest will be practically negligible.
