SURF' LIFE-SAVING
YEAR OF GOOD PROGRESS EIGHTY-FOUR LIVES SAVED Progress during the past year was excellent in all phases of activities, states the report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Surf Life-Saving Association next Thursday. Outstanding in this regard was tho formation of five new clubs: Papamoa, Waihi, Karekare, Mount Eden (Moutihi), and Eastern Suburbs (St. Heliers), the opening of the Piha clubhouse and investigations of new methods of life-saving.
Educational work was undertaken extensively by tho association ae well as by clubs. An association team made a record by visiting Opotiki during one week-end, a trip of 600 miles, where it instructed and competed against Whakatane and Opotiki teams. Waihi was also visited and a club formed ae a result. Club teams visited as follows:—Eastern United: Orewa. Milford Girls: Titirangi and Northcote. Takapuna: Piha. Piha: Karekare. In this regard Mount Maunganui with 25 saves must be singled out for special comment, as must Piha for its fine work. Since the last annual nieeting the association had had to accept, with regret, the resignation of not only its examiner-in-chief and instructor-in-chief, Mr. H. P. Congdon, but also its nssistant.sccretary and registrar, Mr. K. H. W. Kear, and the treasurer, Mr. It. Moor. This loss of officebearers proved a severe one to the administration, but the association was fortunate in being able to persuade Mr. A. C. Faulkner and Mr. M. Adams to accept office as instructor-in-chief and ossistant-Becretary respectively. Mr. R. Feran was appointed registrar in plnce»of Mr. Hear. . While tho first principle of all clubs should he the patrolling of their respective beaches the association had nlways oncouiflgetl healthy competition not for the sake of the prize, but in order to keep club tennis up to the highest pitch of efficiency so that all members wore enabled to take any position in emergencies.
