Thursday A request to the Government to amend the Fa in i 1 y Allowance Act so that tho earnings of an applicant qualified to receive the allowance would be based on £4 a week for a inan, wife and two children, instead of £3 5s a week as at present, was made by Mr. P. .Tones (Labour —Dunedin South), in an urgent question addressed to the Ministor of Finance, Mr. Coates, in the House of Representatives to-day; The Minister replied that the point raised had received consideration when pension increases under review, put having regard to the budgetary position and the general level of wages outside the Public Service, the conclusion reached was that an increase in the basis of the family allowance could not bo justified at present. The fact that J* public servant had part of his increase in salary offset by a reduction in his family allowance could, not bo regarded as a hardship, for it simply meant that w hen his earned income roso he had less need oJt a supplement from the State,
