PLAYERS AND SPECTATORS An umpire's strategy stopped a vicious brawl, which broke out among players and spectators during tho grand final Australian rules football match between Rand and Oaklands, played at Daysdale, New South Wales, recently. Toward the end of the third quarter, two players came to blows, and soon other member of both teams became embroiled. Fists and boots were used in all directions. Spectators swarmed on the ground and took sides with tho combatants. The only policeman on duty, assisted by Umpiie Lester, of Albury, tried to eiear tho field, but so largo was tho crowd that his efforts were of little avail. Picking up the ball, Lester bounced it among the fighting mob. instantly losing their thirst for battle, the footballers concentrated on gaining possession of it. The umpire thereupon signalled tho spectators to lt-ave tho arena, and the game proceeded without further troublo. In an exciting finish, Oaklands won by two points.
