COMING PRODUCTIONS THEATRE AND CONCERT HALL Town Hall November 14.—Royal Auckland Choir. His Majesty's Theatre October 2 to 19. —Madge Elliott and Cyril Ritchard, Musical Comedy Company. November.—Viennese Boys' Clioir. December.—" White Horse Inn." Overseas Rooms October 14. —Society of Musicians. Evening ol Modern Music Tho instrumental and vocal sections and associate members of tho Auckland Society of Musicians will give a combined evening of modern music at tho Overseas Club rooms on Monday, October 14. Tho programme will include modern songs and piano solos and duos and various choral items. Royal Auckland Choir Although tho full programme for tho Royal Auckland Choir's third and final concert of the season to bo held on November 14, has not been decided upon, several solos and choruses from " The Nativity," by Dr. W. E. Thomas will be presented. The entiro work is a lengthy ono and has not been given for some years. For this presentation there will be a mixed choir of about 130 voices.
I Composers and Lyrists I The second club programme to bo 1 presented by tho Composers anu Lyrists' Club will bo given by several of Auckland's leading artists at the New Zealand's Women's National Council rooms, Victoria Street West, on Wednesday, October 16. This newlyformed organisation has boon making satisfactory progress in encouraging talent and making popular various songs by local composers. Sarcasm In Music Mr. Reginald Jacques, a Fellow and Director of Music at Queen's College. Oxford, lecturing recently at the Oxford Summer Course in Music and Music Teaching, criticised the manners of some conductors. " I have no uso for the conductor who cannot get his results without being sarcastic," ho said. " Ono thing I will never forgive in a choirmaster is rudeness. You can be as rude as you like_ to people you know, but, with a choir, always give them the impression that you are honoured to bo witli them." Williamson-Talt Attractions Commencing a New Zealand tour at Auckland in November will bo tho I Viennese Boys' Choir. A feature of their programmes is tho performance of one-act operas, in costmno, tho small lads impersonating female characters as well as male, looking like outsize dolls against the colourful background. Then, in demure sailor suits, or snowy surplices, -they sing bright folk songs, sacred music, modern compositions and ballads. December will see tho stupendous musical play " White Horse Inn " in New Zealand. Both companies aro under the J. C. Williamson, Limited, and J. and N. Tait direction.
Hoist's Early Works Edmund Rubbra describes and criticises somo of Gustav Hoist's unpublished early works in a recent issue of Monthly Musical Record. He finds the svmphonv in F. " Tho Cotswolds (1899-1900), and the soena, " I ho Mystic Trumpeter," for soprano and orchestra (1904), most worthy of revival. " Tho Mystic Trumpeter," which was performed at a Philharmonic concert in 1906, contains interesting anticipations of The Planets " .and " The Hymn of Jesus." Of Hoist's unpublished opera, " Sita," Mr. Rubbra :says " It has many beautiful moments, but there is no doubt that wo have in 'Savitri' the final and mature expression of what Hoist was aiming at in his first opera. Musical Comedy Season Numerous congratulatory messages awaited the arrival at Auckland last week of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Ritchard, Australian stage stars, who are spending a short honeymoon holiday hero before resuming stage work on October 2. That is the date on which they will make their reappearance in Auckland, after a long absence, in a series of musical plays, " Roberta, " Our Miss Gibbs " and "High Jinks." The dates for tho tour have been finalised by Mr. H. Stringer, New Zealand representative for Messrs. J. C. Williamson, Ltd., who states that the Auckland season will last from October 2 to 19; New Plymouth, October 21; Wanganui, October 22; Palmerston North, October 23; Hastings, October 24; Masterton, October 25; Wellington, October 26 to November 9; Christchurcli, November 11 to 22; Dunedin, November 23 to December 3; Tnvercargill, Decombor 4 and 5: Timafu, December 6 and 7. Tho casts include Ethel Morrison, formerly of Wellington; Leo Franklyn, Frank Leighton, Dorothy Dunckley, Mario lo Varre, .Terry Connelly and his instrumentalists, Leslie Crane, another Now Zealander, Charles Zoli.
