CONTEST AT HAMILTON
MUDGWAY DEFEATS OXLEY [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday In a professional boxing match of 10 rounds, held in the Drill Hall last evening, Neville Mudgway, 10st lib, of Waihi, defeated Ted Oxley, 9st 9lb, <sf Pahiatua, on points, the bout being characterised by a great deal of clinching and in-fighting. There was a good attendance, the Hamilton Boxing Association having made excellent use of the ample floor space afforded by the Drill Hall.
Over the first three rounds both men wers' very cautious, with Mudgway having a slight lead on points. In the fifth round Oxley showed to better advantage, but in the sixth he was staggered by a solid right upper-cut to the chin, which Mudgway followed up with a series of powerful swings to the face. In the seventh and eighth rounds Oxley forced the pace, connecting to Mudgway's face several times with jarring left hooks. Over the last two rounds, however, the Waihi man was the more aggressive and secured the decision on points. The amateur .preliminary bouts resulted as follows:—F. White (Putaruru), 99t lib, beat A.'Sprague (Auckland). 9st lib, on points: D. McWillinms (Auckland), 9st Blb. knocked out M. Murray (Putaruru), 9st 81b. in the third round; E. Bongard (Hamilton), Bst 12lb. beat R. Wilson (Auckland), 9st lib. on points in a fast match of six rounds, this being the most exciting bout of the evening: W. Hogarth (Auckland), 9st lib, beat E. Pctchell (Raglan). 9st, on a technical knock-out in the fourth round: R. Hobson (Hamilton), 10st Sib, beat Caltaux (Cambridge), lOst 71b, on points: J. Thornton (Te Awamutu), list lib, beat C. Farmer (Waharon), list slb, on a technical foul, the loser being disqualified for hitting in a clinch after the referee had ordered the men to break. „ , _ The referee was Mr. N. AMBROSE PALMER ARRIVING The well-lcnown Aiutralian light-heavy and heavy-weight boxing champion Ambrose Palmer ivill arrive in Auckland by the Monowai this morning, and he will be the guest of the Auckland Boxing Association at the opening of its annual amateur championship tournament at the Town Hall this evening. Palmer is on his way to England, where he hafl entered into a contract for several engagement!. ,
