"FLOUTED THE COURT"
BREACH OF PROBATION POLICE ASK SEVERE PENALTY [by tfxegraph—OWN correspondent] DUNE DIN, Friday " When the summons was served Waddell sent out for four dozen bottles of beer, apparently to celebrate the event," said Chief-Detective J. B. Young, in the Police Court to-day. "The two men have flouted the Court and deserve no consideration." The two accused referred to were John Lancelot Gladstone and William Jack Waddell, each of whom pleaded guilty rto charges of committing a breach of a prohibition order and failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. The chief detective told the Court that in July of last year the two accused were before the Supreme Court on charges of shopbreaking and theft and they were admitted to probation for a term of three years on strict conditions, one of those being that they were not to associate together and another that they were each to take out a prohibition order and observe it for three years. They had kept out of the way for a year, and then Waddell came to town again and they commenced their association once moie. On August 24 a particularly wild party had been held. It was continued till 5 a.m., and all the neighbours were disturbed. Waddell was seen chasing the other man, with whom he boarded, along the street. The chief-detective asked the Court to consider the effect of the case on other probationers. It should act as a deterrent to others, and show them that they could not carry on as thev liked. "If these men are not criminals," he concluded, "1 don't know who are." The magistrate remanded accused in custodv till Monday.
