.£IOO FINE IMPOSED CONSTABLE TAKES DOUBLES NO " WELCHING" SUGGESTED A charge of being (ho occupier of premises used as a common gaming house was admitted l\v Francis Brewer, who appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Senior-Detective Hall appeared for the police, Mr. Fiulay representing accused. Mr. Hall said a constable saw men making bets at premises in High Street, City, and he placed two doubles with the clerk who was there. Accused would not discuss the matter when he was approached bv detectives. Apart from bookniaking, nothing was known against him. Counsel said accused was not so intimately associated with the concern as might be assumed, and the business was merely a remnant of its former condition. Answering the magistrate, Mr. Hall said there was no suggestion of "welching.' l'he magistrate imposed a fine of £IOO, remarking that no pood could be done by sending accused to prison.
