RYDER CUP GOLF

AMERICAN PLAYERS BY THE BOVER Every other year professional golfers representing America and Britain meet to play for the Ryder Cup, which was presented by Mr. Samuel Ryder, St. Alban's, England, and was first competed for in 1927. The conditions of the match are that it is played alternately in the United States and Great Britain and teams consist of Americanborn or British-born professionals resident in the United States or Great Britain respectively. The American team to play for the cup at the Ridgewood Country Club, New Jersey, on September 28 and 29 has been announced as follows: Walter Hagen (captain), P. Runyan, S. Parks, jun., 0. Dutra. K. Laffoon, J. Revolta, H. Picard, Horton Smith, E. Sarazen and Craig Wood. In the past the home side has always been successful, and, as the American team is a particularly strong one this year, it appears likely that it will regain the trophy, which Great Britain won in 1933. The omission of Leo Diegel is surprising, as ho won the professional championship and was run-ner-up in the oiien at Melbourne in November last year. Walter Hagen has represented his country each year, and he won the British open four times and the American open twice, besides a number of professional events. Hagen is 43 years old, and the fact that he has been selected indicates that he is not yet considered to be a back number in his own country. Runyan, Laffoon, Wood and Sarazen played at Auckland a few months ago, and of this quartet Laffoon is the only one who has not previously represented his country in this international contest. Parks is the present open champion, while Dutra, who turned professional in 1924, won the professional championship in 1932 and the open two years later. Revolta and Picard each nas a good record, and Horton Smith was a few years ago considered by Hagen as the coming champion.
