CHESS TOURNAMENTS
MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP The New Zealand Chess Association's decision to hold a minor championship as an auxiliary to the congress to be held in Wellington at the end of the year was announced at a meeting of the committee of the Auckland Chess Club. The title of "Minor Champion of New Zealand" will go to the winner. The South African Chess Union advised that an Empire chess championship would be held in Johannesburg toward the end ot 1936, at the time of the British Empire exhibition. The New Zealand Association was invited to send a. representative. The committee decided to send a remit to the association proposing that a fund be crer'od to assist any representative approved by the association to compete in the ovent, The, committee also resolved to send a further remit suggesting that arrangements be made for tournaments to be held during the 1940 centenary celebrations, and that invitations be sent to overseas players to compete. It was reported that Mr. C. J. S. Puirdy, Australian champion, who had entered for the present year's congress, intended to make a tour of the Dominion early next year giving simultaneous ' lind blindfold exhibitions of chess, and lectures. The decision of the Otago Club's adjudication committee, which was considering the position sheets of the games in the recent inter-island match, wau expected in about a fortnight, it waiS,'.'reported. Jt was hoped that the result of the adjudication would be a draw, in which case Auckland should win, having the better positions at the higher beards.
