CHILDREN'S INTERESTS

NUTRITION IN MILK PLAN FOR AIDING CRIPPLES [bt: telegraph—ow>- correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuenday Over 80 members of Rotary clubs and guests were present at a gathering at Hamilton last evening with the object of advocating the increased use of milk for schoolchildren. Considerable attention was also given to the work and objects of the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society. There were eight Rotarians present from Auckland and seven from Rotorua, as well as representatives of the Medical and Dental* Associations, farmers' organisations and local bodies. Dr. H. E. Annett, president of the Hamilton club, presided. An address on the value of milk as a food was given by Dr. Garfield Stewart, of Auckland. He described experiments in schools in London and Scotland, which indicated that milk had unique nourishing properties, and he considered that the introduction of milk into schools would prevent much sickness and disability. Mr. Stewart answered a number of questions, and a resolution was §arried that the meeting considered it to be a matter of national importance that a "milk in schools'' scheme should be introduced into New Zealand'. Mr. G. L. Taylor, chairman of the Auckland committee of the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society, outlined the programme of the society. Referring to St. Leonards, the refei-, dence of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Wilson, of Takapuna, which was offered as an institution for cripples, Mr. Taylor said that, in the opinion of experts, it was eminently suited for the purpose. At the very low expenditure of £IOOO it could be made to accommodate 40 to 50 children. The cost of running it with 50 children would be £3OOO annually.
