BROKEN PADDLE
PLEASURE BOAT'S MISHAP I PASSENGERS TRANSFERRED British Wireless RUGBY. Sept. 8 The Southern Railway Company's pleasure siteamer Whippingham, carrying 400 passengers from Portsmouth to Bournemouth on Thursday evening, encountered heavy weather in Chrisitchurch Bay and broke a paddle. A lifeboat from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and steamers from Bournemouth and Southampton went to her assistance, but were unsuccessful owing to the rough seas. ' However, the Whippingham, which was not making water, was taken in tow later and on reaching Bmoother, water the passengers were safely transferred to another of the Southern Railway Company's steamers. Early yesterday morning the Whippingham wiia towed into Portsmouth.
