PUBLIC WORKS POLICY

ABSORBING UNEMPLOYED £3,000,000 LOAN SUGGESTED MINISTERS NON-COMMITTAL [RV TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTERj WELLINGTON, Monday A suggestion has been made in Parliamentary circles that provision may lie made in this session's Budget for an internal loan of £.'5,000,000 at 3 per cent in order to finance a possible extension of the Government's public works programme. Inquiries to-day indicated that this can be regarded only as a suggestion. The comment of the Prime Minister. Mr. Forbes, was that it was the first lie had heard of it, while the Minister of Finance, Mr. Coates, said the matter had not been discussed.

However, this docs not necessarilv mean that there will not be increased provision for public works this year. Statements by various Ministers in recent weeks show clearly that the need for reabsorbing unemployed men at standard rates of pay is fully recognised. As had already been stated there is a likelihood of the issue of a comprehensive programme of works arranged in order of urgency, so that the Government may pursue its policy in keeping with sound principles of finance.
