SHORTAGE OF POLLARD

SHIPMENT FROM MELBOURNE POSITION IN TARANAKI [by TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT! NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday The serious shortage of pollard for stock and poultry food in Taranaki was temporarily relieved by the arrival of n cargo direct from Melbourne to-day. After discharging a large quantity at Now Plymouth the Omana sailed for Auckland to discharge further supplies. The whole of she pollard landed at New Plymouth however, has already been disposed of and it is expected that the shortage will soon become acute again. The shortage was duo, a merchant stid to-day, to the failure of consumers to book their requirements further ahtiad. Supplies were available earlier in the year at a much cheaper price, but always at this time of the year there was a more or 'ess serious shortage. The position now, however, was much more serious than previously. No pollard was available in New Zealand and the Australian market had to be called on at much higher prices. Australian merchants knew there was no pollard in the Dominion, and with very scanty t-upplics in the Commonwealth the price was likely to increase still further.
