WOMEN'S DIVISION

| Makarau.—To celebrate tho first birthday of the branch, members held a birthday luncheon recently. The function was largely attended by members of the branch, members of the Kaukapakapa and Taupaki branches, the Hakanui Women's Institute and also by ladies of the district. The hall had been attractively decorated with the colours of the Women's Division with a profusion of flowers. Mrs. T. W. Hooper, president, welcomed the gathering, and after lunch had been served Mrs. It. Osbaldiston, organiser of the Northern Waitemata District Federation and president of the Kaukapakapa branch, cut the birthday cake. An address dealing with the part that women could play in world affairs, was given by Mrs. T. W. Hooper, while Mrs. Osbaldeston spoke on the progress made by the newly-formed group of the Northern Waitemata district. She also presented Mrs. Hooper with a basket of fruit from the Kaukapakapa branch. On behalf of tho Hakanu: Women's Institute, Mrs. Hooper was presented with a bouquet of lovely flowers, and from the Maori members of the institute, she received a kit. Community singing, with Mrs. T. Garth at the piano, and Mrs. M. Hooper as leader, was enjoyed and songs were given by Mrs. B. Gardner, of Glorit, Mrs. J. Naughton and Mrs. M. Hooper. The accompanists were Mrs. L. Smith and Mrs. T. Garth. Pukekohe East.—At the monthly meeting, the roll call was " Maori sayings." Mrs. Appleby, of Pukekohe, demonstrated copper work, keen interest being shown by those present. The competition for the afternoon was " something new from something old." Mrs. Appleby awarded the first prize to Mrs. W. Robinson, and tho second prize to Mrs. M. Johnston. Mesdames Benjamin and M. Johnstone tied for third place. The branch had recently organised a successful dance, which resulted in a profit of £4 6s 2d. The president, Mrs. W. Morgan,, had donated an iced cake, which brought in £1 6s 2d. Mrs. Keane supplied the music for the dance, Patumahoe.—Mrs. Parkinson, the president, reported on the Waitemata executive meeting. Many amusing and useful hints were received from the roll call, " uses of the potato." Mrs. Woolsey, sen., gained points for her beautiful red and white cinerarias. Mrs. Williams was first in tho marmalade competition, and Mrs. A. Woolsey was second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames McAlpine and L. Noedham. Putaruru. —The eighth birthday anniversary of the branch was celebrated with a largo gathering of members and friends. The president, Mrs. J. J. Shine, presided, and spoke briefly on the ideals and activities of the organisation. Community singing was led by Mr. G. V. Pearce, and a programme of instrumental, vocal and elocutionary items was given by Mrs. Freeman, Miss Ashton, Mr. W. E. Clare, Mrs. Knight, Mrs. Tulloch and Mrs. Shine. Incidental music was played by Mrs. Lloyd Francis. Tea was served by the vice-presidents, Mesdames G. G. Ranger, P. F. Karl, D. D. Sneddon and L. Small.

Mauku. —The president welcomed two new members at the August meeting. Articles,to the value of 6d wore brought by members for the exchange table. Finished garments for the bazaar were handed in, and arrangements made to purchase more material. Expressions of sympathy were passed to Mrs. S. Rowe, who is an inmate of an Auckland hospital. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Carter and Gordon. Ngahinapouri.—A meeting of the branch was held in the local hall on Thursday, Mrs. J. J. Ryburn presiding over a good attendance. Mrs. Mcintosh gave an address in which she touched on many topics of interest to her listeners. An entertaining competition was won by Mrs. Nulls. The roll call was " a good hand emollient." The month's competition. " a knitting bag," was won by Mrs. McWhannell,' while the flower competition resulted in an equal number of points going to Mrs. McWhannell and Mrs. McGregor. Afternoon tea brought a sociable afternoon to a close, the hostesses being Mesdames S. and W. Reid. East Waikato.—The East Waikato provincial executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union met in the division's clubrooms at Tirau recently, Mrs. Allan presiding. A report of the quarter's work was given by Mrs. Allan, who stated that 15 housekeepers had been employed by the executive. She also reported upon the work done at the recent conference. At the close of the meeting the Tirau ladies aerved afternoon tea.
