STREET APPEAL

AIDING LIFE-SAVING CLUBS VALUABLE COMMUNITY SERVICE A street appeal on behalf of the surf life-saving organisations, the Victoria League and the Navy League will be held to-morrow. The importance of this 'ife-saving movement is shown by the fact that the existing clubs in the Auckland Province were responsible for saving •58 people last season With the approach of summer and the over-increas-ing popularity of surf -bathing, the Surf Life-Saving Association is busily engaged in arranging its activities for the coming season. The scope of tho activities is dependent upon the finance available. If sufficient support is forthcoming it is hoped to increase the equipmont already provided on beaches not patrolled, and also to further extend the valuable work of the clubs already oporating. The formation of further clubs and an increase of the number of trained men available for patrol work will also bo undertaken. Educative work, particularly among schoolchildren, is done by the Royal LifeSaving Society, while the Surf LifeSaving Association carries out patrol work and performs other practical aspects of life-saving. Particular attention is always paid to tho cure of children, and several of the clubs have received praise from grateful parents, while surf men have always given freely of their knowledge to children desirous of learning to swim. With the increase of clubs and the adoption of a uniform costume to be worn by all qualified men, which will make them easily recognisable, it is hoped that a fuller appreciation oi the community service provided by the surf life-Baving clubs will 'be obtained.
