STANDARD RATES OF PAY

ONE TREE HILL SCHEME ABOLITION OF RELIEF WORK A decision to abolish the No. 5 scheme in the One Tree Hill borough and substitute worlt at standard rates of pay for a certain number of men, subject to approval of a subsidy scheme by the Unemployment Board, was reached at a meeting of the borough council last night after discussion in committee. / The scheme involves the employment of 20 men at Is lIId an hour for a 40-bour week, on street improvement, stormwater drainage and water-main extension works. The cost to the borough will be £2160 for the remainder of the year, including £9OO for wages. It is hoped to secure a subsidy of £'l 15s a week for each man from the Unemployment Board. In moving the adoption of the scheme fiubsequently in open meeting the Mayor. Mr I. J. Goldstine. said the step was «n important one He regarded it as a move toward the reostahlishmcnt of pre-depression conditions. It should not be thought that by closing down relief works the council was greatly penalising the balance of the mon. They would go on to sustenance, and would not recoive much lesis than at present, while by hot having to work a certain numher of days a week they would have more opportunities to find regular work 'I he men not engaged at standard rates would not be disi>ensed with immediately, but over a period.
