WATERFRONT ROAD

TRIEE-PLANTING AT ORAKEII IMPROVEMENT OF LOCALITY ■ A new beauty spot is being developed on the waterfront road at a point wberw the conditions have not been in keep* ing vritlli the remainder of AucklaudV most attractive hea-front drive. This work is being carried out by the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board near the Orakei pumping station, where native trees; and shmbs are being planted to improve the appearance of the short reclamation between the waterfront road where it passes orer the storage tanks and the hillside. When the tanks were built a space was left on the inner side and for yean this hais been subject to flooding at high-vrater periods. Clinker and ash from the pumping station furnaces has been dumped into the area from the southern end and a sufficient amount of reclamation has now been completed to make a start with planting. By an arrangement with the City Council, / men from the parks department are now surfacing the filling with good soil, and yesterday native trees and shrubs were planted. Later it is intended to grass the surface, and the result should be a pleasing improvement. So far only a small portion of the area, has been filled, as the amount of material from the furnaces is limited. At the present, rate of progress it will take many years to complete tbc filling. It has been suggested that the arrangement, with the City Council might bp carried a step further rp that papa roi.-k and clay which is continually falling It'roni the cliffs between Orakei and Miission Bay can be dumped into the gap, and the whole area from'tb"-' pumping station to the point near Orakei Point filled in within the nest year or two.
