Sir,—Who was it who promised "X.S.M." that the last war was fought "to make a better world to live in?" Germany wanted "a place in the sun" and oversea possessions. After years of preparation and self-denial she made a bid for it and put up a wonderful fight. Had she won New Zealand would have become a German colony. "X.S.M. might possibly be alive to-day, but certainly would not b,e earning any wages at all. War is the acid test of manhood, and the great majority who left these shores to fight for their country proved themselves. A minority, perhaps through no fault of their own, were quite unfitted for the job. Discipline and small discomforts seemed to upset their balance. They even complained of the quality of the food provided in the New Zealand training camps, and considered the' saluting of a superior officer an unwarranted degradation. Civilian.
