WHANGAREI BOROUGH

MATTERS BEFORE COUNCIL STAFF SUPERANNUATION PLAN [from our own* correspondent] "WHANGAREI, Wednesday The Whangarei Borough Council at its meeting on Monday decided to appoint a committee comprising the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, the deputymayor, Mr. G. 11. Morrish, and Messrs. N.'E. Crimp and J. Brown to investigate a superannuation scheme for the council's staff and make a recommendation to the council. In moving the resolution, Mr. N. E. Crimp considered it desirable that the borough's staff should have provision made on their behalf for superannuation upon thei* retirement from the services of the council. The council should be prepared to make a reasonable contribution to any scheme recommended by the committee. The Whangarei Unemployed Workers' Association wrote asking the council's support in endeavouring to obtain reconsideration by the Master Bakers' Association of its decision to discontinue the concession on bread supplied to relief workers. Tho council decided it could take no action as it was a matter outside the scope of its activities.

On the recommendation of tho Electricity Committee, the council decided to increase the hours of street lighting until 12.30 a.m., the present time being midnight. The engineer's estimate of the cost of the half-hour extension was £3O per annum. The engineer was instructed to submit a comprehensive report upon the flooding of the northern end of the borough with surface water during heavy rains with a view to remedial measures. The engineer was also instructed to report on the plans of tho proposed Victoria Bridge with a view to final adoption. The Library Committee reported having approved of tho plans for a new library as submitted by the architects.
