THE WEEKLY NEWS
TO-DAiY'S PUBLICATION NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH THE ROYAL ENGAGEMENT Twelve pages of tho pictorial section of this week's issue of The Weekly News, which is on sale to-day, are devoted to scenic features and news topics from the provinces of Nelson and Marlborough. The number is a most attractive one and should make a 'wide appeal not only in Nelson and Marlborough but to all. regular readers of The Weeklv News. On the centre double page are new views of Nelson City, Blenheim and Picton. Glimpses of B:erepuru Sound, Marlborough, and Lake Rotoroa, Nelson, appear on the frontispiece, being typical examples of the sceniic attrac-. tions of both provinces. Other Nelson and Marlborough features include orchard activities, harvesting and other farm scenes, old-time views, industrial and sporting activities, whaling in Cook Strait, " Pelorus Jack," well-known homes and gardens and items of social interest. Excellent studio portraits of the Duke of Gloucester and Laiiv Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott, whose engagement was announced last week, appear in this issue. The annual winter sports of the Ruapehu Ski Club at National Park and the popi.lar Rotorua open golf tournament are both illustrated. A Belgian Royal Family group and a favourite portrait of the late Belgian Queen, who was killed in a motoring accident last week, are also reproduced. In the letterpress section, in Addition to the pages devoted to Nelson and Marlborough, the news oE the week is fully covered. There are articles dealing with the Duke of Gloucester's bride-to-be, Lady Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott. Another pa.ge is devoied to the romantic story and tragic death of the late Queen of Belgium. A further instalment of Field-Marshal Haig's war diaries discloses that on. the retreat from Mons Sir Jchn French proposed to withdraw the British Army from the fighting-line. Regular readers will also be pleased with the tense_ new secret service serial story, beginning in this issue.
In the sporting pages appears a striking article by Mark Nicholls, in which he contends that the Home Rugby unions have scored an initial victory over the All Blacks by the shrewd way they have grouped the hard matches of the tour. The prospects for the Marton races, the Otago Hunt meeting and the Epsom trotting fixture are discussed, and " Archer " has written an interesting review of the Wanganui Guineas field.
