NUMBER OF ENGLISH BIRTH The American film public, accustomed to regard every Hollywood player as an American, has been astonished to find that one actor in every four is foreign-born. The precise total is 28 out of 96. Statistics also show that the average age of leading artists is 139 for men and 30 for women. Although Sweden can point to Greta Garbo, Germany to Marlene Dietrich, Russia to Anya Sten, and Mexico to Dolores del Rio, Lupe Velez and Ramon Novarro, England easily leads the foreign countries. Among the better-known players born in England are Charles Laughton, Leslie Howard,. George Arliss, Ronald Colman, Robert Donat, C'.iarlos Chaplin, Herbert Marshall, Clive Brook., Roland Young, Frank Lawton, Sir Guy Standing and Evelyn Laye. . America, however, claims the biggest box-office player—the late Will Rogers ■—as well as such outstanding favourites as Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, the Barrymores, Wallace Beery, Ann Harding, Joan Crawford and Kay Francis.
