SKI CLUB'S SPORTS

MEETING ON RUAPEHU PROVINCES DIVIDE HONOURS SNOW CONDITIONS VARY [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER"] THE CHATEAU, Friday In spite ot intermittent snowfalls on the higher levels, an exceptionally large programme of events in the Ruapehu Ski Club's annual winter sports meeting was decided on Scoria Flat, Mount Ruapehu, to-day. Snow conditions varied greatly, fast stretches with a wind-swept, icy surface being interspersed with very soft patches. The absence of many leading skiers who have left for the South to compete in the New Zealand ski championships at Mount Cook led to several comparatively new competitors coming to the fore. Honours were fairly evenly distributed between the provinces, Wellington securing most successes. The ski jump was held on the slope outside Salt Hut, and, although few of the entrants achieved great distances, finished style was shown by several of them. The results in this event have not been announced, but Thomas, Murie and V. Clarkin, National Park, are the likely place-getters. The men's and women's slaloms were held over shorter and easier courses than last year, but some interesting racing was seen. The events to-day attracted many spectators.

The men s downhill course involved a descent of nearly 1000 ft., commencing above Scoria Flat. The women's downhill was over the lower part of the men's course.
