RATES ON PREMISES
LEGAL OPINION SOUGHT PORTION ONLY OCCUPIED [by TELEGJIAPII—OWN CORUKSPONDKNTI TK AROHA, Friday An unusual situation in regard to the rating of unoccupied premises was revealed at Wednesday's meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council, when a letter was received from a firm which for many years conducted a largo foundry and farm machinery factory in To Aroiia. About a year ago this firm removed its business to Auckland, leaving vacant its old premises, which occupy a considerable area. Subsequently, however, a small corner of the main building was lot to a painter as a workshop. Now that the annual issue of rate demands is imminent, the question has arisen whether the property is to lie classed as occupied or unoccupied. If classed as unoccupied the rates—a considerable sum in tho aggregate—would of course be on the lower scale as applying to premises lying vacant for a period of 12 months. Apart from the paintshop corner tho lower-scale conditions apply, and it is the wish of the council to rate on such scale provided this course is permissible in lavf\ Legal opinion from the Municipal Association is to be sought.
