COOK STRAIT AIRWAYS
OrENING OF SERVICE MACHINES DUE IN DECEMBER LATEST SAFETY DEVICES [BY TELEGHAI'Il —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NELSON, Friday It is anticipated that Cook Strait Airways will commence a service between Nelson, Blenheim and Wellington just prior to Christmas. Advice has been received that its Dragon Rapide machines will arrive by the Dorset on December 5. The machines aro fitted with the latest safety devices, including the Sperry directional gyro, artificial horizon, wireless telephony, and powerful landing-lights. Flight-Lieutenant G. Bolt, chief pilot for the company, has since his arrival in England gained his B certificate for blind Hying. The company has engaged Mr. A. Orchard, at present engaged by Jersey Airways, as second pilot. Mr. Orchard, whoso homo town is Blenheim, was trained in the Marlborough Aero Club, and later served in tho Royal Air Forco beforo joining Jersey Airways, where he has been piloting machines similar to those to be used in tho. Cook Strait service. Mr. W. Temple, of tho Royal New Zealand Air Forco at Wigram, has joined the company as chief ground engineor. His assistant will be Mr. Colin Philpott, of tho Wellington Aero Club staff. The company endeavoured to .have its aeroplanes allotted tho colours of black and whito, similar to tho funnels of the Anchor Shipping Company's steamers, but silver with a blue stripe and black top on the fusolago aro tho colours which have been allotted. Tho registration letters,of tho machines will bo ZK-AED and ZK-AEE. «9
