HIGHWAYS IN THE NORTH

Sir, —Why spend large sums of money on parts of roads that are not subject to flooding and are passable in winter months, and not on works on the sections of roads that are flooded each year? The Automobile Association reports each winter that roads are flooded and impassable. On making inquiries it has been pointed out that one of the main causes is not proper supervision. The engineers appointed by the Public Works Department on behalf of the Main Highways Board are burdened with a multitude of other petty jobs, and are not able to put proper supervision on main route roads. On the Continent, Canada, America, and even in Australia, engineers are appointed to sectional parts of main roads and mostly their whole time is supervision of their sections, bridges and general maintenance. This Dominion must cater for thousands of tourists in the near future, and one of the main assets, to a tourist's point of view, is good main roads. Progress.
