RUGGED WRESTLING
WIN FOR McCREADY DECISION OVER BLOM FIELD SUBMISSION FALL GAINED Rugged wrestling, relieved at intervals by more spectacular work, characterised the professional contest between Earl McCready, of Canada, and "Lofty" Blomfield, of New Zealand, at the Town Hall last evening. The Canadian secured the decision by a submission fall in the seventh round. Both contestants forced the pace throughout, the lively exchanges providing a crowded house with fine entertainment. The early part of the bout saw Blomfield, by reason of more forceful wrestling, holding an advantage, over his opponent, but McCready, who showed exceptional strength in escaping from a number of punishing holds, came back strongly over the latter stages. The fall was gained by McCready after a particularly lively period. Blomfield, who had been dazed by a series of headlock throws, managed to force his opponent back on to the ropes, but the Canadian rebounded quickly to lower the New Zealander with a flying body scissors, which he quickly converted to his favourite hold, an octopus deathlock. Blomfield was not long in deciding to submit. In a somewhat hectic final round Blomfield attempted to even tjie falls, but McCready, although dazed by forearm jolts and several heavy headlock throws, managed to hold out to the finish. McCready's weight was announced at 16st. 121b., while that of Blomfield was given as 16st. Gib. Mr. C. Pollard refereed both the professional and amateur bouts. Prior to the commencement of the contest, Sam Burmister issued a challenge to Blomfield. McCready's Strength A reverse Japanese armlock had McCready in trouble in the first round, but he showed strength in forcing his way clear, and the contestants then roughed one another with powerful side headlocks. Blomfield roused his opponent in the second round by seizing his ears in order to throw him in a flying headlock and when the iSew Zealander was inclined to indulge in forearm punching McCready was quick to retaliate. Bringing Blomfield down with an aeroplane head scissors, McCready soon had him writhing in a standing splits. A brilliantly-applied reverse toehold gave Blomfield an advantage in the next round, and an exciting moment followed as both contestants bounced about trying for an effective flying tackle. Blomfield appeared to have a chance when ho got the Canadian in the first position for a Boston crab, but the latter was too experienced to allow Ins opponent to step over and complete'the hold. The advantage varied in the succeeding two rounds as first McCready rolled the New Zealander around the ring in a rocking-chair splits, and subsequently, Blomfield went close to securing a submission fall with a combination leg scissors and barred toehold. Blomfield endeavoured to force matters in the sixth, but was repulsed, and then in the next round McCready caught his opponent napping to secure submission fall. Excitement was high in the final round as Blomfield mado a last strenuous effort. Amateur Preliminaries Bantam-weight.—Kisha Bana, 7st. Sib., beat R. Nottingham, Bst. 21b., by one fall secured in the second round. The contestants gave a thoroughly entertaining exhibition, showing cleverness in applying and escaping from a large variety of holds. Bana was too elusive for his opponent. Welter-weight.—K. Brewer, 9st. 121b., beat C. Curtice, 9st. 71b., on points. The wrestlers were earnest enough in their efforts, but lacked initiative. Feather-weight.—W. Boag, Bst. 91b., beat J. Hurley, Bst. 71b., by one fall gained in the third round. The winner forced the pace throughout, but it was not until near the finish that he was able to secure the decision with a body scissors and press. Welter-weight.—D. Rawle, lOst. 71b., heat F. Murphy, lOst. 61b., the latter being unable to continue after Rawle had secured a fall in the first round.
