LEADER OF SHIPPING
SIR CHARLES HOLDSWORTH MEMORIAL SERVICE [from our own correspondent] LONDON. July 27 Friends of the late Sir Charles Holdsworth assembled last Wednesday for a memorial service in St. Andrew Undershaft, the heart of London's shipping area. All New Zealand shipping lines were represented, and a number of other business men were present. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Willesden. The bishop reminded his listeners that it was only recently that they had gathered in the same church to take part in a memorial service to the son— Godfrey Holdsworth. It was to call for sympathy for the bereaved family. He referred to the late Sir Charles as a great leader of shipping enterprise, with courage and vision. He was from one of the pioneering families of New Zealand —the country which he had served with religious devotion, and with his great gifts of energy and zeal. The bishop referred to a tribute in the columns of the Times that day in which the writer said: "As a man his nature was gentle and kindly. He had a great love of athletics and loved his garden. His musical ability was out of tho common, whilo his knowledge of Shakespeare and his love of literature made him always an interesting companion." "We come here," said the bishop, "to remember all these qualities, and he thankful for that life which has helped to build up and construct so much of the fabric of the common life around us."
