NIGHT MOTOR PATROL
SUPERVISING TRAFFIC NEW SYSTEM COMMENCED A patrol system designed to bring night traffic in Auckland City and suburbs under adequate control was inaugurated yesterday, when two experienced officers of the Auckland City Council traffic staff wore on special duty from 4.30 in the afternoon until 11 o'clock last night. The motor-car allocated for the use of the officers is a plain, closed model, outwardly distinguished only by the city crest on the front door panels. The principal duty of the officers chosen for the patrol is to exercise a general supervision and control over traffic at night, and also to carry out point duty when necessary, particularly between 10 o'clock and 10.30 at the junction of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road. Last night while one of the officers was engaged on this task the other used the patrol car to supervise traffic in Queen Street during the outward rush after the theatres had closed. The acting-chief traffic officer, Mr. C. Bland, said yesterday that he had been instructed that the work of the patrol was to be carried out with discretion, courtesy and consideration for both motorists and pedestrians. This aspect was apparent in the activities of tho patrol last night. Several motorists whose lights were faulty were stopped and advised that they were committing n breach of the regulations, and in each instance the warning was appreciated. A wide area was covered by the patrol, which operated on the waterfront road and on most of tho main traffic routes within a radius of about four miles or the contre of the city.
