STEDMAN BEATS ROGERS DEFEATED IN DOUBLES (Received August 25. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 24 In the finals of the North of England tennis championships at Scarborough Wilde and Butler defeated Lvttletonttpgers and A. C. Stedman (New Zealand). 6—B, 6—3, 6—4, 7—5. In the singles Stedman defeated Lyt-tlcton-Kogers, 6—2, 6 —3. The loser was very nervous and lacked his usual brisk style. FIRST TEST MATCH AUSTRALIA V. SOUTH AFRICA CRAWFORD IN GOOD FORM (Received August 25. 5.5 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG. Aug. 24 The first tennis test match Australia v. South Africa was begun to-day in bright and breezy weather. In the singles Quist defeated Kirby (South Africa), 6 —3, 6 —3; Crawford defeated Farquharson (South Africa), 6—3, 5—7, 7 —5. In tho doubles Crawford and Quist defeated Farquharson and Altisgrove, 6 —3, 6—4, 4—6, 6—4.
Tho match between Crawford anJ Farquharson was the most thrilling seen in South Africa for years. Both played a high standard. Farquljarson was- the. stronger at the net, but Crawford's hard driving prevailed. GAMEi IN AMERICA NATIONAL DOUBLES FINAL OF WOMEN'S EVENT NEW YORK, Aug. 24 In the semi-finals of the women's doubles in the United States tennis championships at Brooklino Misses Dorothy Andrus and Caroline Babcock defeated Misses Freda James and Katherine Stammers (Britain), 6 —3, B—6,8 —6, and Miss Helen Jacobs and Mrs. Palfrey-Fabyan beat Misses Lyle and Dearman (Britain), B—6, o—4. In the final Miss Jacobs and Mrs. PalfreyFabyan beat Misses Andrus and Babcock, 6—4, 6—2. In the men's doubles Shields and Parker entered the semi-finals by defeating Menzel and Maier, 3—6, 6—3, 9 —7.
