INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Horotiu. —The monthly meeting was presided over by the president, Mrs. White. A welcome was extended to the visitors, and two new members were enrolled. Mrs. Taulson and Mrs. Moynalian were elected as delegates for the group meeting. A competition for the best apron not to cost more than Is 6d, proved very amusing, and resulted: — Mrs. Paddy, 1; and Mrs. McCarthy, 2. The judges were Mesdames Clarke and Smith. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Martin, Law and Moynahan and Miss Starr. Gleniield. —The institute held its third birthday party in the Glenfield Public Hall. The president, Mrs. Dyer, welcomed about 130 visitors. A bright and varied programme was presented, which included vocal, violin and pianoforte solos, elocution items and two humorous sketches. The hall was tastefully decorated with early spring blooms and palms. Afternoon tea was served by the members of the committee. Matamata. —Mrs. Stewart, delegate to the recent conference, presented her report of proceedings. Competitions were held and were judged by Mrs. Houston, president of the Ashburton Institute, who was visiting Matamata. Wellsford—Mrs. Leslie presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Smith, of Port. Albert, gave a report of the Dominion conference. The thrift article competition was won by Mrs. Coby with a clothes draining board, made out of a butter box. Miss A. Smith gave pianoforte solos. The hostesses were Miss Robertson, Mesdames Newton ami Stark. To Awamutu. —There was a largo attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the institute. Miss M. Reilly gave a demonstration of tatting, while Mr. J. Oliphant held the interest of all with a description of the early historic events of the Te Awamutu district. A bring-and-buy stall, well laden with articles, did good business. Matakana. —'The monthly meeting was presided over by Mrs. G. Melville. The motto was given by Mrs. R. Campbell, and was followed by a reading bv Mrs. Melville. A demonstration of sweet making by Mrs. G. Hodgetts, was enjoyed. The competition, " artificial flowers," brought forward a number of beautiful exhibits, the winners being Mrs. E. Roko and Mrs. Allan. Apata. —The August meeting of the institute was held at Mrs. Morrison's residence. The president, Mrs. Mountier, presided. Mrs. Johnston, a visitor from Katikati, gave a good review of the Dominion conference. Mrs. Blackburn was the winner of a guessing competition, and Miss Turner won the prize for the best article marie from a sugar bag. Mrs. Hawthorne was the winner of the flower competition. Old photographs exhibited caused much amusement. Wardville. —Four new members were enrolled at the last meeting of the institute, and a report of the recent Dominion conference was presented. Arrangements were made for the " husbands' night," and social and supper committees were formed. A demonstration of petal work in organdie was given by Mrs. Hughes. The competition for the best knitted scarf was won by Mrs. Carseldine. Waihi. —An outline of conference matters was given to members at a recent meeting of the institute by the president. Knitting competitions were won as follows:—Best socks: Mrs. McDonald, 1; Mrs. R. Seaton, 2. Best gloves: Mrs. Thrower, 1. Four new members were enrolled. East Tamaki. —Mrs. C. Allen presided at a meeting of the institute. The roll call was " favourite sayings or proverbs." A competition for the best plate of gems was won by Mrs. P. Knowlcs, and the best article in papiermache, by Mrs. Ferguson. Two songs were sung by Mrs Smith. Hostesses were Mrs. C. Allen, Mrs. Guy, Mrs. ELnowles and ill's. Quinn.
