The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairlv representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. TRADE GENERALLY SLOW STEADY MARKET FOR LAMBS The following cablegrams have been received, dealing with the Smithfield market as at the close of business last week*? — Bank of New Zealand:—Wethers: Smaller supplies have caused prices to harden. Ewes: The demand is steady. Lambs: The market is steady and no material c.hange is expected yet. Tratie generally is slow, owing to hot weather. Quotations: Wethers, light, 4Jd to 5d per lb; heavy, <Hd to 4Jd; ewes, 2d to 2£d; lambs, twos, 7Jd to 7Jd; eights, 7Jd to 7gd; fours, to 7d; seconds, 6d to 6j!d. New Zealand Meat Producers' Board: —Lambs: The market remains firm for light-weights, with a tendency to be a shade easier for heavy-weights. Consumption continues good, but heavier supplies of home-killed are now being marketed. Mutton: The market for wethers is very firm. Prices have advanced owing t<* short spot stocks. Ewes: For light-weights, the market is steady and unchanged; other weights at slightly better prices. Beef: The market is quiet and steady, with trade slow, owing to low prices for chilled beef. New Zealand porkers: The market is firm at increased prices, owing to more inquiry. New Zealand baconers: Nominal; very few available. OPOSSUM SKIN SALE PRICES FOR LOCAL SUPPLIES Dalgetv and Company, Limited, Auckland, has been advised by its Dunedin branch that at the opposum skin sale held in Dunedin on Friday skins from the Auckland district sold from Is 6d to 2s higher.
