NAME OF NEWMARKET

SUGGESTED DERIVATION Another suggestion as to how New-, market derived its name is given by a correspondent to the Herald. He states: " In 1857 the Parnell end of Newmarket was sold as small farms, and that part of the borough now comprising the Rialto Theatre, tho reserve known as the Triangle, and the property bounded by tho Royal George Hotel'and the Municipal Buildings was the " small farm " purchased by Mr. F. G. Clayton, afterward Mayor of Newmarket. " Mr. Clayton commenced a business as ft stock and station agent, working on his own account. At that date all stock sales for the district were held just outside the boundary of tho Clayton farm, so the locality came to be called Newmarket."
