PROTECTED TIMBER CUT
ROTORUA SCENIC RESERVE TWO MAORIS BEFORE COURT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] XOTORUA. Thursday "Under the Act, anyone who cuts firewood or timber on a scenic reserve without the permission of the Minister in Charge of Scenery Preservation, is liable to a fine of £IOO, plus all the damage done," said Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Potorua Magistrate's Court to-day, when convicting two Maoris of cutting timber on a scenic reserve in the vicinitv of the Blue Lake.
After hearing evidence tlie magistrate said that in the present ease it appeared to him that perhaps defendants had committed the offence owing to ignorance of the law. He would not, therefore, inflict a fine, but defendants would have to pay the amount of the damage done to the bush, which he assessed at £1 2s 6d, plus Court costs and translation fee.
