DOMINION PRODUCE

BRITISH POLICY OPPOSED PREFERENCE BY TARIFF Disapproval of the British Government's present policy in connection with imports of produce was expressed by a leading English agriculturist, Sir Herbert Matthews, of London, . who arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Niagara from Vancouver. For 30 years Sir Herbert has been secretary of the Central and Associated Chambers. of Agriculture, London. "I agree that the British agriculturist needs protection, but at the same time I think Britain should encourage imports from the Dominions," said Sir Herbert.- "A tariff should be used to control foreign -imports. It might bo necessary to impose a slight tariff upon tho produce of tho Dominions, but they would have preference. England is the heaviest taxed country in tho world, and the tariff would also serve to provide revenue for the relief of the taxpayer." The visitor said ho would like to seo an Empire currency in force. A standard currency operating throughout the Dominions would go a long way to solving current problems. In afforestation, Sir Herbert consideredj New Zealand had given a lead to tire world. In the Dominion the replenishment of forests had been commenced earlier than in either Germany or India, which were two other countries that realised tho value of afforestation.
