CHURCHMEN IN GERMANY
ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT CRITICAL STATE IN PRISON LONDON. Aug. 10 Friends of the German orthodox community have appealed to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang, on behalf of the Orthodox Metropolitan, Dr. Schmucker. Herr Haeberle, another member of the church, alleges that the German Government, in spite of its assurances, is still persecuting the Orthodox Church. Dr. Schmucker was arrested in 1933 and teken to a Wurtemburg concentration camp, where he was kicked, illtreated and forced to work in freezing weather clad only in trousers and shirt, necessitating his remaining in bed for monthu after his release. Herr Haeberle also was ill-treated. Both subsequently sued the commander of the camp for damages, whereupon they were rearrested and are still imprisoned. Their condition now is critical.
