THE TROTTING TRACK
USEFUL WORK AT EPSOM SIRE AND SON GO WELL AUTO MACHINE, WEE MACHINE BY ABAYDOS In spite of adverse weather and track conditions at Epsom on Saturday morning, Wee Machine and his sire. Auto Machine, were responsible for a good effort over a mile and a-half on the cinders. Others engaged at the Auckland meeting who showed useful form were Nimbus, War Girl, Spessiva, Mountain Dell and Star Pronto. On the sand Young Rodney and Worthy Nor gave good trotting displays. Wee Machine (W. Willetts) went away a second ahead of Auto Machine (A. Brown) and as they approached the half-mile, Aerial Bell (C. G. Lee) hopped away some lengths ahead of Wee Machine, who came away at the finish to win nicely in 3.26. He paced very smoothly throughout and, heading Aerial Bell two furlongs from home, held off the final challenge of his sire, to clock 1.8 for the last half. Auto Machine ran the last mile in 2.17, and his time for the journey was a shade faster than that of the winner. Aerial Bell, with the advantage of a useful start, set a merry pace for six furlongs, but had had enough at the finish, taking 2.22 for the rhile. Spessiva (A. Bryce) gave Brown Betty (A. Cole) four seconds start from the mile and a-quarter, but they were together at the end .of five furlongs, where Gold Pointer (G. Bodman) hopped away well in front of them. Crossing the top Gold Pointer slipped and Spessiva took charge to go on and win comfortably in 3.2, the last half in 1.10. She paced well and put some dash into her finish. Gold Pointer ran the last half in 1.4, and Brown Betty, who did not handle the track confidently, took 3.9 for the journey. Anthony's Gift In Saddle Anthony's Gift (S. M. August), after sprinting a few furlongs smartly, was Sent a mile in saddle. He began smartly, reaching the half in 1.8 3-5, but after passing the six furlongs in 1.44, tired in the run home, to finish in 2.24. Anthony's Gift looks a trifle on the jolly side, and should improve. Mountain Sun (W. Fleming) set off to go a mile and a-half, but made a couple of bad lapses in the first half of the journey. Settling down solidly Mountain Sun trotted well to run the next six furlongs at a 2.26 gait. Nimbus (A. W. Broughton), after working two circuits at approximately a 2.30 gait, improved on an extra lap to run a half in 1.10. He put a good deal of energy into his final effort. Mountain Dell (L. Mitchell) was not hurried on the first mile of a two miles task, but increased the pace for the next one to finish in 4.58. She ran the last mile in 2.23, sprinting the final half, without being undulv pressed, in 1.9 4-5. A War Girl (J. Holt) came away over the last furlong of a mile and three furlongs, to beat Charteris Bay (G. Cole) 'decisively, in 3.4, the last half in 1.10 3-5. War Girl showed more dash than in her efforts earlier in the week.
I Kewpie's Crest (A. Chapman) went | away from the mile and a-balf, beinc | joined at the mile and a-quartor by i Dean Parrish (W. Gee), and at the j finish shaded the three-year-old to run | the last half in 1.13. There was not ] much "pace on early but both paced 1 resolutely on the final circuit, Dean j Parrish hanging on well. Young Rodney's Sound Task On the sand, which was very heavy. Young Rodney (G. Bodman) outj stayed Autumn Lou (G. H. Stubbs) to beat her home at the end of a soundlyrun two miles. Young Rodney gave a fine display and handled the soft track well. Worthy ' Nor (P. H. Morrison) trotted in faultless style for three circuits, sprinting the last quarter fast Guy Lee (C. G. Lee) gave a sound exhibition over two laps, but was not asked to go fast. -He has filled out nicely since being sent along in solid work. Star Pronto (B. Dyer), after going j an easy mile and a-half on the cinders, stepped the last mile in a repeat task at a 2.30 gait, sprinting home the last quarter. Silver Watch (L. J. Maboney), working alone, was in lazy mood while going three laps, his fastest half being 1.14. He is in splendid racing condition. Manoeuvre (S. M. August) was given an easy task over several circuits, her best effort being a half in 1.11. She is carrying a very bright appearance and may soon be back to her best form. Other members of August's team. Mute, Luminate, Argolis and Replica, were given strong work, Mute trotting four laps at a sound clip. Lucky Love and Great Chum were let off with useful saddle work on the sand. Grey Mist (L. J. Mahoney) was given a few sprints in saddle and performed creditably, although she is carrying a good deal of condition. TROTTING CUP FIELD LOOSENING OF THE LIMITS [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS association] CHBISTCHURCH, Saturday Although a number of horses are eligible to compete in a 4.26 class, it is doubtful if enough arc available for the next New Zealand Trotting Cup, that is, if the race is restricted to those horses that are on 4.26, or faster marks. Officials of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club hoped that two or three horses would qualify at the August meeting, but only Wild Guy reached the necessary grade. To ensure the big race in November being a success, fresh blo.'d is needed, and the club may make the conditions for horses assessed at 4.27 or faster, but the limit will be 4.26. That would enable War Buoy and Tempest to compete in the next. cup. The field then may consist of War Buoy, Wild Guy, Tempest, Red Shadow, Glenrossie. Indianapolis. Blue Mountain, Roi L'Or, Harold Logan, Worthj T Light-, impromptu, Lindberg. Silver do Oro, Sunny Morn and . Sir Guy.
