TAWA FLAT LINE
TEMPORARY SERVICE URGED PROPOSAL " NOT PRACTICABLE " To facilitate the erection of buildings and the preliminary work necessary for the opening up of the Tawa Flat district, the general manager of railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, has been asked by a deputation from the Greater Wellington .Development League, if it would not be possible to run a temporary passenger service through the tunnels. While sympathetic with their desires, Mr. Mackley gave reasons why this could not be done. Mr. Mackley said that the work of the scheme as a whole had been carried out with remarkable expedition and would so continue, and if it were possible to advance the opening date of "the deviation for passenger trains, ho would be pleased to do what ho could to bring this, about. liut it should not be overlooked that this was the biggest public work of its kind in hand present, and was very closely associated with the operation of existing services and the utilisation of existing facilities with the necessary changeovers as the genera] scheme advanced, which made it practically impossible to materially expedite the opening date.
