In to-daj f 's instalment from Mr. Duff Cooper's biography of the late Field-Marshal ILerl Haig an account is first given of the general situation which caused Sir John French to issue his sudden order to retreat from Mons. Then the narrative is resumed from Haig's diaries, giving his decision to organise a rearguard and the progress of the retirement to Bavai and then across the Sambre River to Landrecies. It may come a 9 a surprise to many to read of the efficiency with which Haig extricated his Corps on this first stage of the retreat.
